Nursing Blogs vs HIPPA Laws

I’ve been having a hard time finding “interesting” topics to write about that don’t break HIPPA laws or endanger those that I work with/for. Many of the good stories in medicine (or at least a surgical ICU) come from patient specific stories and if there is any doubt in my mind that something I may be inappropriate to post, I just won’t write about it… no matter how much I really want to share the experience. I was talking about this very topic at last week’s KiteUp with Heather Lee (@aussieheather). She helped me to realize that I can’t let this issue stop me from writing posts all together. I need to start focusing on the overall lesson/moral of a story and use that as a basis for a story instead of the patient’s situation itself.

Just a note… working on my next post now :)

    Hi Amy
Nice blog with valuable information. I do write nursing stories and HIPPA laws gets on the way lots of times. I learnt to use either third person language without any identifiable information or using pseudonames like gamma, alfa, etc. This way, what I give is like a once upon a time kind of a story. I hope that helps
